History

Manoora Seeds can trace its beginnings back to Ern Laurie and his family who ran a chaff mill on the site. The mill burnt down in 1965 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1968. David Garrett, a local farmer and pasture seed harvesting contractor, bought the business and commenced trade as a seed cleaning business in what is now the front office of Manoora Seeds Pty Ltd.

Frustrated at having difficulty in having seed cleaned for sale — especially when the nearest service was over 110 km away in Georgetown — David started with a small Hannaford grader, an indent cylinder and a small gravity table. The whole set up was smaller than some mobile units today. However, production was laborious with the seed having to run through the plant twice and the bags sewn by hand. In fact, the maximum output was a quarter of a tonne per hour — a far cry from what we produce today.

David sold the business to certified seed producers Murray l’Anson, Robin Manley and Ken Warnes who saw an opportunity to add value to their products. Being centrally located to all three farms, it also guaranteed them a handy place to process their seed.

Today the business consists of two seed cleaning plants and employs eight people.
